Equality Scheme

Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act 1998 (the Act) requires public authorities, in carrying out their functions relating to Northern Ireland, to have due regard to the need to promote  equality of opportunity and regard to the desirability of promoting good relations across a range of categories.

Public authorities are also required to produce an Equality Scheme which explains how they intend to fulfil these duties. The Equality Scheme Action Plan is the output document of the equality commitments we have made.
The Equality Scheme and action plan for Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council was approved by the Equality Commission on 25 March 2015.

It can be accessed below and paper copies and accessible formats are available on request. Information will also be provided in copies and in minority languages to meet the needs of those who are not fluent in English.

Disability Action Plan

Under Section 49a of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (as amended by the Disability Discrimination (Northern Ireland) Order 2006), public authorities when carrying out their functions must have due regard to the need to:
  • promote positive attitudes towards disabled people; and
  • encourage participation by disabled people in public life.
The two duties are collectively referred to as ‘the disability duties’. Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council have designed their Disability Action Plan (DAP) 2016 - 2020 as our commitment to fulfilling these duties in relation to its functions.
