The Mayor changes every year and is elected by fellow Councillors at the Annual Meeting in June. He represents the Council at many civic and ceremonial events throughout the Borough of Antrim and Newtownabbey and wider afield. During his term of office, the Mayor will remain apolitical and will seek to avoid official duties where his presence could be considered divisive to good community relations.
The correct title for the Mayor for formal invitations and introductions is “The Worshipful the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth”. In a more informal situation, the correct form for introductions is “The Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey, Alderman John Smyth.”
After initial introductions the Mayor should be addressed as “Mr Mayor”.
The Mayor is the first citizen of Antrim and Newtownabbey and by law has precedence in all places in the Borough, except when the Sovereign is present. Accordingly, in any formal seating arrangements he should be seated on the immediate right of the host or person presiding. This only varies if a member of the Royal Family or the Queen’s Representative is present (such as the Lord Lieutenant), in which case the Mayor should be seated on the left of the host.
Please note that in the absence of the Mayor, the Deputy Mayor is accorded the Mayor’s right of precedence within the Borough. The correct title for introductions is “Councillor Anne-Marie Logue, Deputy Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey” and after initial introductions, “Deputy Mayor”.
